Denpasar is Bali’s bustling capital city and it is a place that most tourists fear to tread.
However, beneath the surface, it is a fascinating destination brimming with art and culture. A guided half day or full day tour takes a closer look at this multi-faceted centre.
Accompanied by an English speaking driver, our Denpasar city tour departs after breakfast or lunch depending on your preferred time schedule. The first stop is the Bajra Sandhi monument located in the consular district of Renon. With its dramatic central spire, the monument is instantly recognisable and is surrounded by a public park. Inside, it contains photographs and diorama rooms which recount the rich and turbulent history of the Balinese people.
The Bali Museum in the heart of Denpasar is another site of local interest, which houses a large collection cultural and religious artefacts spanning different eras of history. To the north of the museum is the picturesque Jagatnatha temple where followers of the Hindu faith gather to pray every full moon. The adjacent Puputan Badung is actually Bali’s central park and it is where a mass suicidal protest took place in 1906 against the Dutch colonial army. Another iconic landmark in the immediate vicinity is the Catur Muka Statue that has four faces representing the power of God Almighty.
Our final location is the nearby Kumbasari Market, which a multi-storey shopping venue. Be prepared for a sensory feast as there are literally hundreds of stalls selling handicrafts, antiques, woodcarvings, textiles, paintings and jewellery. On the other side of the river is the Badung Market, a riot of colour, spice and commerce that specialises in fresh fruit & vegetables, household items and religious paraphernalia.
